SCULPTURE KHMER SANDSTONE FEMALE TORSO FIGURE ANGKOR WAT BAYON STYLE 13TH C Description. A Fine 13th century hand-carved sandstone Female Torso of a divinity figure, stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional Khmer Angkorian’Bayon’ style, from the northern region of Cambodia. She, standing in’Samabhanga’, with severed head, both her upper and lower arms and legs broken, with a well defined naked upper body, and slender profile, wearing a long vertical striated sampot, hung low about the midriff with the navel visible, secured by a decorative belt intricately carved, and fashioned with a wide central panel draped in a stylized fish-tail flang down the front of her garment to the bottom hem. The torso is in excellent condition, a solid fragmented section, unaltered and unrepaired, beautifully modeled with detailing still clearly visible, and with no evidence of recarved features. The relatively smooth, yet grainy surface shows even wear on the entire piece, with weathering consistent with age. This skillfully executed image is a superb example of the Khmer culture and its dynamic artistry. Dimensions: Height 23.0 inches (59 cm) including base.
